Networking/Social Event: Karaoke in SF Japan Town October 29, 2009

The event will be held at Playground at 1705 Buchanan Street in San Francisco's Japan Town. The price of admission is a mere $5, and in return, AABA will be feeding you seven different appetizers and a never-ending supply of drinks including soju, soju cocktails, and beer. We are currently soliciting singers, but contestants may also sign up the day of the event. The top performers will be awarded prizes.

SCBA Distinguished Lecturer Series - Peter Orner - October 14, 2009

The Sacramento County Bar Association’s Constitutional Law and Civil Rights Division invites you to its 2nd Annual Distinguished Lecturer Series at 5:30pm on Wednesday, October 14th, at Sofia Restaurant in Sacramento.

This year, the series features Peter Orner speaking on “The Intersection of Law and the Arts: Documenting Civil Rights Stories.” Peter Orner is an attorney turned writer who is the author of the novel, The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo (Little, Brown, 2006), and the story collection, Esther Stories (Houghton Mifflin, 2001). The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo, a Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a San Francisco Chronicle Best-Seller, won the Bard Fiction Prize. It is set in Namibia where Orner lived and worked in the early 1990's. Currently, Orner is an associate professor at San Francisco State University.

The Sacramento County Bar Association presents a Celebration of Unity, The Presentation of Law Student Scholarships, and the Honoring of Citizens of our Community for Outstanding Service, at its annual Unity Bar Dinner on Thursday, October 22 from 5:30-9 at the Doubletree Hotel in Sacramento. The Dean's Office and LSA Board have agreed to sponsor 2 King Hall Student Tables for 20 students.

ACLU Summer Legal Internship

The American Civil Liberties Union is seeking 1Ls and 2Ls for summer 2010 legal internships with their Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Suggested application submission periods are as follows:

• 2Ls applying for Summer 2010 should apply between September 7, 2009, and November 20, 2009.
• 1Ls applying for Summer 2010 should apply between December 7, 2009, and January 22, 2010.

Constangy, Brooks & Smith is proud to present the 2010 Diversity Scholars Awards. The $3,000 scholarships will be granted to a deserving second-year law student at an accredited law school in each of 3 regions. The regions are as follows: (1) Southern (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee); (2) Mid-West/West Coast (Texas, California, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin); and, (3) Eastern (North Carolina, Virginia/Washington, D.C., South Carolina and Massachusetts).
