SCBA Distinguished Lecturer Series - Peter Orner - October 14, 2009

The Sacramento County Bar Association’s Constitutional Law and Civil Rights Division invites you to its 2nd Annual Distinguished Lecturer Series at 5:30pm on Wednesday, October 14th, at Sofia Restaurant in Sacramento.

This year, the series features Peter Orner speaking on “The Intersection of Law and the Arts: Documenting Civil Rights Stories.” Peter Orner is an attorney turned writer who is the author of the novel, The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo (Little, Brown, 2006), and the story collection, Esther Stories (Houghton Mifflin, 2001). The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo, a Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a San Francisco Chronicle Best-Seller, won the Bard Fiction Prize. It is set in Namibia where Orner lived and worked in the early 1990's. Currently, Orner is an associate professor at San Francisco State University.

The day concludes with the Unity Awards reception on the 5th floor. Each participating bar association presents an award to one of its members for outstanding service to the legal community. This year, the MBC will be giving a special recognition award to California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno.

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has partnered with LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell (LNMH) to celebrate the launch of the MCCA Community on Martindale-Hubbell Connected by offering two special LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell Connected Fellowship Awards. Based upon a competitive selection process, MCCA and LNMH will choose two recipients who will each receive a $15,000 fellowship funded through the generosity of LNMH to assist in furthering the educational and professional objectives of two third-year law students (1 male and 1 female) who anticipate graduating from law school in Spring 2010.

The two $15,000 awards will be presented at the MCCA Diversity Dinner, which will take place in New York City at the Marriott Marquis on November 11, 2009. Terence J. Cassidy will be presenting on the topic of "May it Please the Court: The Art of Oral Arguments Before the Supreme Court in the Pledge of Allegiance and Other Cases." Mr. Cassidy is a shareholder with the law firm of Porter Scott in Sacramento and holds the distinction of not only appearing before the US Supreme Court twice, but also prevailing in both cases. County of Sacramento v. Lewis, 523 U.S. 833 (1998) involved civil rights issues arising from a police pursuit, and Elk Grove Unified School District v. Michael Newdow, 542 U.S. 1, which garnered national attention, involved a claim that the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance violated the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The cost for law students is $20.
